Update 15th April 2026: Our Android app now supports BS 7671 Amendment 4!

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ Questions and Answers

There are loads of UK electrical certification tools available - how is Zerta different?

If you’re issuing BS 7671 certificates in the UK, you’ve probably already used one or more of the usual options.

Some people still use paper certificate pads from scheme providers like SELECT, NICEIC or NAPIT. They’re familiar and straightforward, but they can be slow to complete, easy to make small mistakes on, and awkward to store or resend later.

Others use editable PDFs or desktop software on a laptop. That can produce professional results, but it often means re-typing the same details, needing a computer rather than a phone on site, and dealing with paperwork in the evenings after a day’s work.

A lot of sparks now use apps or online platforms, usually on a subscription. These can be powerful and work brilliantly for larger firms, especially if you want job management, invoicing, scheduling, or multi-user access. If all you want is a clean, compliant certificate tool, they can sometimes feel heavier and more expensive than necessary. Some systems also use token or per-certificate pricing, which can be frustrating to work with.

Zerta exists exists because none of those quite matched how we were working in our own very small rural firm, based in the south of Scotland. If you want to record details on site, work without internet signal, avoid yet another subscription or token system, and stop certificate writing building up into evening admin, that’s exactly the gap we built it for.

We’re not trying to replace the bigger all-in-one trade platforms. We’re offering a simpler alternative for when you just want to get your certificates done more simply as a small firm.

Which certificate types does Zerta support?

Zerta supports Electrical Installation Certificates (EIC), Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificates (MEIWC), and Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR).

Does Zerta support BS 7671 Amendment 4 (2026) and future updates to the Wiring Regulations?

Yes. Zerta is built to stay aligned with the current version of BS 7671, and that includes ongoing support work around Amendment 4:2026 and future Wiring Regulations updates.

The IET and BSI have confirmed that Amendment 4 is due to be published on 15 April 2026 for immediate use, with BS 7671:2018+A2:2022+A3:2024 due to remain valid until 15 October 2026.

That matters for certification because EICs, MEIWCs, and EICRs need accurate standards references, current wording, and certificate layouts that match the version of BS 7671 you are working to.

Zerta is actively maintained so certificate formats, references, and guidance can be reviewed whenever the standard changes, helping you avoid outdated paperwork.

Can I complete a certificate while I’m still on site?

Yes. Zerta is built so you can fill in an electrical certificate while you’re still on site, instead of taking notes and typing it up later. You can record circuit details, test results and observations as you go, even if you’re standing at the board.

Because everything works offline and is stored on your device, you don’t need a signal to keep working. Once you’re happy with the details, you can generate a finished PDF before you leave and send it to your customer when it suits you. For example, you could attach it to an email which then automatically goes out when your phone has an internet connection.

Does Zerta work fully offline?

Yes. You can create and edit certificates, and produce client-ready PDFs, fully offline. You only need an internet connection when you are ready to send the finished PDF to your client via email or message.

No personal or company data is stored on external servers. Everything is stored locally on your device, and Pro users can back up and restore their data as they like.

Is Zerta designed for use on a phone or tablet?

Zerta is designed first and foremost for use on an Android phone, so you can keep all your certificates with you on site without needing a laptop. The layouts are set up to work on smaller screens, so you can easily move between sections and type in test results with one hand if you need to.

If you prefer a bigger screen, you can also run it on a compatible Android tablet. Whichever you use, the app works the same way: do some or all of the work while you’re on site, with professional PDFs ready to send when you are ready.

What if I prefer to complete some bits of the certificate by hand?

Zerta doesn’t need to replace every part of how you work. You might want to add extra notes in blank fields, or mark up readings by hand on site, before you issue the final certificate later. Zerta is there to handle all of the data input and PDF layout if you want it, but also support you to work in whatever way suits you.

You can generate a finished PDF from a fully-completed certificate, or you can complete it as much as you prefer then print it out and add any extra notes or signatures by hand. The goal is to save time on the repetitive parts, not force you into a completely different way of working if you prefer a hybrid approach.

Can I edit a certificate after it’s been completed?

Yes. If you spot a typo or need to update details after you’ve finished a certificate, you can reopen it in Zerta, make your changes, and regenerate the PDF.

The app always works from the latest saved version on your device, so you stay in control of what your client sees.

Can I duplicate previous certificates to save time?

Yes, if you have upgraded to Zerta Pro. When you are working on similar jobs for the same client or installation, you can duplicate an existing certificate and use it as a starting point instead of typing everything from scratch.

You can then update any details that have changed – for example circuits, test results or observations – before generating the new PDF. This helps to keep your paperwork consistent while still matching what you need for the latest job.

How do I send certificates to clients?

Once you’ve completed a certificate, you can generate a clean PDF ready to send to your client. Most users either email it directly from their phone or send it via WhatsApp or a similar messaging app.

Because the PDF is generated on your device, you stay in control of how and when it’s shared. You choose which app to use and when to send it.

Can I try it before paying?

Yes. Zerta has a free version so you can see how it fits into your workflow before paying for anything. You can create certificates, explore the different sections and generate a preview of the finished PDF.

When you’re ready, you can unlock Zerta Pro with a one-off upgrade from inside the app – no subscriptions, tokens or monthly fees.

What is the difference between Zerta Free and Zerta Pro?

Zerta Free lets you create unlimited certificates (EIC, MEIWC, and EICR) and view a full professional PDF preview of each one. It’s perfect for seeing exactly how the app fits your workflow without any cost.

Zerta Pro is a one-off upgrade that unlocks professional features like exporting, printing, and sharing your finished PDFs. It also allows you to add your own company logo and branding, use local backups to protect your data, and save time by duplicating previous certificates for similar jobs.

Do I need a subscription, tokens, or monthly fees?

No. Zerta Pro is a one-off paid upgrade which is valid for the lifetime of your Google Play (Android) account. The Free version includes the core features and lets you preview your finished certificate so that you can see what the finished document looks like, and so you know you like the results.

Do I need an account to use Zerta?

No, you don’t need to create an online account to use Zerta. Once you’ve installed the app on your Android device, you can start creating certificates straight away.

All of your data is stored locally on your device, and Pro users can back up and restore their data as they like. There are no logins to remember and no central account to manage.

Is Zerta available on iPhone/iPad (iOS)?

No. Zerta is Android-only for now.

Is Zerta affiliated with the IET, NICEIC/NAPIT/SELECT, or BSI?

No. Zerta is not endorsed by, or affiliated with, any of these organisations.
